Oil burners are popular again. It was expected. When the first announcement about such upgrades for the mid-size truck were made, truckers went crazy. Now, all main pickups are using diesel engines. US truckmakers are competing between themselves. The 2023 GMC Sierra Diesel is one of our favorites, although it needs a few improvements.
The 2023 GMC Sierra Diesel is a mechanical twin of Chevy Silverado. That means both trucks will carry the same unit. Duramax is producing the powerplant. For the new season, towing capacity will need a boost. On the other hand, there are a few cool options for the pickup – including AT4 off-road package. If you want the truck to tow and be very comfortable, then there is the Denali model.
Under the Hood
The diesel powertrain is a 3.0-liter Duramax unit with turbochargers. General Motors has trucks with the most power, compared to the competition. The 2023 GMC Sierra Diesel will get 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Converted to towing capacity, that would be 9,200 lbs. Pretty bad, since the main rivals are able to haul 2k pounds more. An inline-six engine is turbocharged and mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission of the latest generation. It will cut down turbo lags. The mileage is improved, compared to petrol engines. It reaches 30 mpg with the RWD and highway drive. In the city, it drops to 23 mpg. Four-wheel drive harms the fuel economy and with it, the Sierra truck returns 22/26 miles per gallon of diesel. This is still better than the gas mileage.
Still, if you are looking for the alternative engines on this pickup, the base offer includes a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit with 310 hp and 420 lb-ft. You won’t be able to haul too much with it. The Sierra 1500 skips a V6 and jumps into the V8 wagon with a 5.3-liter displacement. Properly equipped, this unit will allow you to tow 11,500 pounds, and only a 6.2-liter motor with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft can beat that. The maximum hauling potential of the Sierra 1500 truck is 12,200 lbs.
2023 GMC Sierra Diesel vs Rivals
One thing less to worry about – Toyota opted out from the diesel segments for their trucks. Instead, the new Tundra features the I-Force petrol engine with enhanced outputs. Meanwhile, US carmakers launched diesel units together. Sierra’s twin, Chevy Silverado 1500 is using the same Duramax mill with equal outputs and potential. The only difference is that Chevrolet deploys a V6 engine as one of the options.
But, General Motors will follow Ford and Ram half-ton trucks. The F-150 is the best-seller in the segment. The Blue Oval company developed a 3.0-liter turbodiesel with 250 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of twist. Although the outputs are not at the same level with the 2023 GMC Sierra Diesel, Ford F-150 can tow up to 11,500 pounds. Ram 1500 Diesel beats that by 1,000 lbs. Its EcoDiesel unit is tuned to 260 hp and 480 lb-ft, which will be good to haul 12,600 pounds. The price of all those trucks in the base form is similar. From there, you will pick up the best options either company is offering.
