For a quite while we are waiting for the Volkswagen’s move in the US truck segment. Their Amarok is pretty popular over the sea. But, the special pickup is coming to North America. As far as we know, it will be 2021 VW Atlas Tanoak. Atlas is the mid-size SUV for some markets. In most of the world, we will recognize it as Touareg. So, it is obvious that the upcoming truck is going to be based on the existing SUV.
After successful recovery after the emission scandal, the German carmaker is moving on and conquering new markets. The 2021 VW Atlas Tanoak is the latest project. Fans expected to see the pickup this year, but a few delays postponed the premiere. The good thing about that is some experts are already weighing the possibility of the electric pickup. The ID concept is underpinning a couple of SUVs, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if the all-electric pickup hits the US market.
2021 VW Atlas Tanoak Concept Details
Two years ago the truck was available for the test ride. Experts immediately spread the word that the pickup is almost ready. We thought it is happening. But, the Atlas Tanoak is yet to hit the production.
The concept was based on the MQB platform. That means the pickup is riding on the unibody concept. The only rival with such configuration would be Honda Ridgeline. All other mid-size trucks are using ladder structure and body-on-frame architecture. No one expected the 2021 VW Atlas Tanoak as the full-size model and rival to Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, Toyota Tundra, Ram 1500.
Unibody architecture is the main question mark. How many buyers would be interested in such a truck? Pickups are facing the competition of versatile SUVs. Their working capability is the biggest reason why trucks are not dead. Models with unibody platform can’t tow as much as BoF pickup. Plus, the ladder frame is more durable. The positive side is the cheaper price.
2021 VW Atlas Tanoak Specs
The perfect engine for the 2021 VW Atlas Tanoak is a 3.6-liter V6 engine capable to produce 280 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed auto gearbox is a power router that sends power to front wheels. Volkswagen will offer their 4Motion all-wheel drive system as optional. Truck’s sibling, VW Atlas is using this engine and it offers 5,000 pounds of towing capacity. For the Tanoak, the configuration will be tuned to make at least 7,000 lbs. Also, we can see the start/stop system, and drive modes. Sport is not needed for such a vehicle, but selecting Eco mode when not working could save some fuel.
New Release Date and Price
The MSRP of the 2021 VW Atlas Tanoak will be around $28,000. That means about $3,000 cheaper than Honda Ridgeline. Volkswagen is going to use a V6 engine. Other mid-size models with such power also cost more than $30,000. You can save if four-cylinder engines can meet your demands.
The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak will be released somewhere next year. The company is not going to launch it this year. However, we could see the premiere of the production truck.
