Tacoma is one of the best trucks in the USA. While the F-150 is dominating in the full-size range, Toyota’s mid-size model is a leader in its segment. However, the truck is aging and it requires changes. Nevertheless, the new generation is scheduled for 2023 and 2021 Toyota Tacoma will introduce modest changes.
First of all, we will see updates in the color palette. But, what is more important, the engine room could be also revisited. A diesel engine is coming? Maybe. It is not confirmed yet, but the truckmaker is not denying rumors either. They did it with Tundra. Finally, we expect to hear plans for the hybrid unit.

2021 Toyota Tacoma Specs
The main drivetrain for the 2021 Toyota Tacoma remains a 3.5-liter V6 engine. The truck benefits from 280 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. Well, this is the more popular model, while the base versions are using a 2.7-liter four-cylinder unit. The reason is obvious, more power means better fuel economy. The four-pot mill is good for 160 hp and 180 lb-ft. A 6-speed gearbox is standard and buyers can choose manual or automatic mode, as well as 2WD or 4WD drive. The maximum towing capacity for the mid-size truck is 7,000 pounds.
Diesel or Hybrid
More and more rivals are using diesel engines. The main competitor was Chevy Colorado, but now Jeep Gladiator also added a huge diesel unit to its lineup. What’s more, we expect Ford to make the same move when they bring the Raptor version for its Ranger. But, the 2021 Toyota Tacoma diesel is still not likely to happen.
Instead, the company will be after the hybrid unit. The same V6 engine is providing power for Highlander Hybrid SUV. But, the towing capacity pays the price of the extra mileage. When we talk about trucks, the priority is hauling potential.
2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Changes
The new version of the TRD Pro package would definitely refresh the offer. We saw that this version was added to Sequoia full-size SUV. The next step is upgrading the existing lineup. Tacoma TRD Pro is one of the toughest pickups in the market. Colorado ZR2 with diesel engine is the only model that can keep the pace and offer similar performance. We will see the capabilities of the upcoming Ford Ranger Raptor.
The new 2021 Tacoma is going to be the same as its predecessor. The company added the Android Auto service, which joined Apple CarPlay launched a year earlier. We also expect changes in the infotainment system. It could hit the new generation in 2021.
Colors on the new Tacoma will be fresh, although we still don’t know which ones will be added. Currently, there are nine possible options, and we bet most of them will be there again. Army Green and Magnetic Grey are the latest colors added to the lineup and it is available only with the TRD Pro package.
