Kia was serious about the launch of its new vehicle. But then, the COVID-19 outbreak spoiled the situation for the carmaker. Still, the 2021 Kia Truck is still possible, but we need to see the coronavirus calm down first. For a long time, the Korean company plans to enter the new market. The first concepts were launched in 2005, but the Mojave pickup saw no production. It doesn’t have anything in common with the existing Mohave SUV.
Now, Kia is reviving the interest in this project. Of course, 15 years later, the concept is not going to serve as the base for further development. Instead, the manufacturer can turn to its Korean partner, Hyundai, whose Santa Cruz truck is almost ready for the premiere. This wouldn’t be the first time the two companies are cooperating. We can find similarities in other classes as well, and joint forces are more than needed for the pickup market, especially if 2021 Kia Truck wants to be recognized in the US.
2021 Kia Truck Specs
Although unconfirmed, the upcoming pickup truck is going to get the same drivetrain as the latest Telluride SUV. A 3.3-liter displacement is capable of producing 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. Most mid-size pickups are using the same powerplants as equivalents from the SUV class. So, the 2021 Kia Truck will get enough juice from a V6 unit. The downside is a fuel economy. Hauling machines are heavier and use more gasoline when packed with a lot of cargo. On the other hand, different upgrades will increase the towing capacity. Currently, Telluride can pull 5,000 pounds. The truck will go up to 7,000 lbs.
This is one of the reasons why we probably won’t see a hybrid configuration. It would improve the fuel economy, but you wouldn’t be able to tow as much as with a conventional setup. At least, we won’t see it in the foreseeable future.
Release Date and Price
The new 2021 Kia Truck will appear as soon as the situation with COVID-19 calms down. However, the Korean company is not going to start producing the pickup just after the premiere. The manufacturer will make it available worldwide, so diesel units are also possible in some countries. Nevertheless, the main market is the US, and the debut will be at some of the biggest auto shows here.
The competition in this segment is more than tough. The revival of the mid-size class makes it the hottest part of the automotive industry. The comeback of the Ford Ranger is going to cause a new order. Now, with the 2021 Kia Truck also joining the party, the situation will be even more interesting. Best-sellers are Toyota Tacoma and Chevy Colorado, whose off-road models are dominating the market. Nissan is preparing the new generation of Frontier truck. Meanwhile, the only pickup riding on the unibody platform is Ridgeline. However, Honda has no benefits from it, since its model ranks at the bottom of the sales charts.
