Rampage was the utility vehicle, which were very popular during 80s. However, their time has passed and many nameplates were shut down. Still, the popularity of the vehicle was very high and Dodge decided to give it another run. But, the concept from 2006 never lived on and entered the production. Now, with the resurrection of the mid-size truck class, the 2021 Dodge Rampage is more likely than ever to make a comeback.
The situation is perfect. Ram 1500 overtook the #2 spot in sales from Chevy Silverado 1500. The FCA launched a mid-size pickup, called Gladiator. However, it is not exactly what we have expected. It is more of the Wrangler-based truck. The classic mid-size utility vehicle spot is still open. We see a few possibilities for the FCA and the 2021 Dodge Rampage is one of the options. It can also wear the Ram badge. Dakota is another option, while the Fiat Fullback is out of the game.
2021 Dodge Rampage Specs
One of the biggest reasons why we believe the Jeep Gladiator is not going to succeed in the midsize truck market is its diesel engine. The company decided to go with a large 3.0 displacement, available for the full-size Ram 1500. For example, Chevy Colorado uses a lighter Duramax unit, and Ford is probably bringing a 2.2-liter turbodiesel for Ranger.
Besides a lighter diesel unit, the 2021 Dodge Rampage will get a V6 petrol unit. A 3.6-liter Pentastar is a perfect choice for this segment. It can produce nearly 300 hp and the truck can count at 7,000 pounds of towing capacity. The entry-level versions could use a four-cylinder powerplant. The FCA can make a 2.4-liter engine the base choice with a more attractive price. Also, this is the time of hybrid units. Do not exclude such configuration as well.
2021 Dodge Rampage Release Date, Price
The cost of the new truck will depend on the engine it uses. The lowest price buyers will pay should be around $24,000. Well, Jeep and Dodge vehicles are not among the cheapest in the market. Upgraded with either V6 or some diesel unit, the price could go up to $30,000 (starting MSRP). The question is – will this pickup get the SRT package with a high-output engine? In that case, the performance truck will cost more than $40,000.
The 2021 Dodge Rampage will be a mid-size truck. Some of the shapes from its previous appearance could be used. The 2006 concept is cool, with a coupe cab styling. However, the trucks are working machines and their utility is the thing designers need to pay attention to. And then comes the look.
The pickup will probably be based on the new Durango. The mid-size SUV is moving to the BoF platform, which is going to replace the unibody architecture and make the vehicle stronger. The same structure will support the ladder frame and chassis of the Rampage truck. The first test mules could appear by the end of the year and we will know more about the new pickup. Do not be surprised if it shows up as 2021 Dodge Dakota.
