Chevrolet Silverado is not the biggest rival to Ford F-150. Sales in the previous season show that Ram 1500 had more buyers. Well, the FCA made huge steps to catch up with two other US truckmakers. One of the reasons might be GM’s inertness and lack of true novelties. Yes, the company launched a diesel truck. But, for several years Ford is making the difference and General Motors has no response. Well, the 2021 Chevy Reaper would be the first step. The company might not achieve big sales, but this model would show the intention to fight.
The Reaper concept is pretty old, But, Chevrolet is yet to launch a mean truck. They have the ZR2 Bison in the mid-size segment, where Colorado is a leading force. In the half-ton class, Ford Raptor lacks a true competitor. We can speak about the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro off-road model, but sales show there is no competition there. The 2021 Chevy Reaper would offer something special to the fans of the bow-tie carmaker.
2021 Chevy Reaper Concept and Release Date
A few years ago, an image of the aftermarket package appeared and it seemed to be it. Chevrolet Silverado was presented with the Reaper badge on it. Still, until now, the company didn’t go after the production. But, last year we saw a truck under heavy camo that could be an off-road oriented model. Well, the new generation of Silverado is still fresh and the missing piece in the lineup is the performance version. The 2021 Chevy Reaper is being tested, but it could arrive as a ZR2 package for the existing pickup, or it can use some other name. The current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic slows down the development. Still, the pressure might push the company to put an extra effort and bring Reaper next season.
2021 Chevy Reaper Specs
We will start with Ford’s offer. Raptor is delivering 450 hp and 510 lb-ft from a twin-turbo V6 engine. Chevrolet can respond with slightly lighter output from its 6.2-liter V8. Still, the massive unit lacks 30 ponies and 60 pound-feet. Plus, a V8 would make the 2021 Chevy Reaper heavier than its rival, which will definitely cause the difference in performance.
Another option is GM’s 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8. In this case, the so-called Blackwing engine is capable to burst up to 550 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. The boost is enough to make the Reaper muscular and able to challenge Raptor. Definitely, this will make the truck the most powerful unit in the segment, at least until Ram Rebel TRX comes out with 707 horsepower.
There are no too many performance-oriented trucks in the market at this moment. Ford F-150 Raptor survives thanks to the versatility of the base model. FCA hinted at Ram Rebel TRX and this version caused a lot of interest. Still, the truckmaker is not delivering this pickup. Trucks are surviving thanks to their utility, while SUVs are dominating in all other segments. Another model we can take as a rival is the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro package. It is one of the toughest off-roaders in the market. Still, the Japanese company tunes it with just 380 ponies. Reaper will belong to the higher class.
