It’s back. The legendary nameplate, replaced by Colorado, is now available in South America. Still, the US buyers are not going to have a chance to purchase the pickup. Its place is reserved. The company replaced S-10 more than 15 years ago. Ever since the new Colorado was impressive. Currently, that is the most capable mid-size truck in the market with a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds. A diesel engine that helps the pickup achieve this number, will be there for the 2021 Chevrolet S-10 as well.
The history of the S-10 truck is long. It was the first compact pickup by the company. The “quarter-ton” truck was also available with the GMC badge on its grille and the S-15 logo, later Sonoma. A high-performance version came out as GMC Syclone. Isuzu also used the same platform and named its pickup Hombre. The production of Chevy S-10 was ended in the US in 2004, and the vehicle lasted for a few more years in plants in Brazil. Now, the 2021 Chevrolet S-10 is back in South America. In the future, we could see more markets offering the pickup.

These two vehicles will be archrivals in Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, and other South American countries. Buyers in this part of the world love trucks and two new models will draw a lot of attention. Toyota HiLux seems to be uncatchable for the first editions, but the 2021 Chevrolet S-10 could compete against Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara, and Mitsubishi L200.
Still, a new player promises a lot of fun. FCA removed Fiat Fullback from South America, but it didn’t take too long before the replacement arrived. Ram 700 will be the main rival to S-10. Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles are now delivering the second best-selling model in the full-size segment, where Silverado 1500 was untouchable. The Ram 700 is another threat to GM and we will see which one will South American buyers like the most.
There are two engines available for the 2021 Chevrolet S-10. Of course, diesel is a favorite and GM is using this powerplant for all of its trucks outside the US. With 200 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque, it can tow more than 7,700 pounds or 3,500 kg. It is also saving fuel and you can pair it with a 4×2 or 4×4. The company is not responding to questions about the special off-road Z71 model. This one is available for the recently discontinued Holden Colorado in Australia. The same package would be a perfect fit for South American tough terrains.
If you are not a fan of oil-burners, a 2.5-liter four-pot petrol unit is an option as well. Owners of the 2021 Chevrolet S-10 with such an engine can count on 205 horsepower and a manual transmission. Still, truckers can opt for the 4×4 and automatic gearbox. As the pickup, the vehicle is available with a single and double cab. Chassis cab is the third configuration available for the 2021 Chevrolet S-10.
